WHY STEM-GEF(U)
A movement for real change
Stem Girls Education Foundation Uganda (SGEF-U), formerly known as STEGS Education Trust Fund, was founded in 2010 by Hon. Sylvia Ssinabulya, former Member of Parliament for Mityana District. The foundation was established to expand access to quality education for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing scholarships, mentorship, and science education opportunities. Since its inception, SGEF-U has supported more than 300 girls, working closely with St. Elizabeth Girls' School, Mityana to improve learning through science resources, laboratory development, and vocational education.
As education and technology continue to evolve, the foundation transitioned to Stem Girls Education Foundation Uganda (SGEF-U) to strengthen its focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Today, SGEF-U equips girls with the knowledge, practical skills, and innovative mindset needed to succeed in STEM careers, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development, empowering them to become future leaders and problem-solvers in their communities.
Active Projects
These initiatives are currently creating direct environmental impact across communities.
ICT and Robotics Club – AgriSmart Solar Project
Our ICT and Robotics Club empowers students to use technology to solve real-world agricultural and environmental challenges. Through the AgriSmart Solar Project, students gain hands-on experience in robotics, programming, electronics, and renewable energy while developing innovative solutions that promote sustainable agriculture and strengthen essential STEM skills.
Clean Cooking and Eco-Briquettes Project
Deforestation and the high cost of cooking fuel have inspired our students to produce eco-friendly charcoal briquettes from recycled biomass. This project promotes renewable energy, environmental conservation, and entrepreneurship while equipping girls with practical skills in sustainable fuel production, waste management, and business development..
Waste Recycling and Segregation
Waste Recycling and Segregation Project teaches students how to properly sort, recycle, and repurpose waste to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Through hands-on activities, girls learn environmental conservation, responsible waste management, and entrepreneurship by transforming recyclable materials into useful products while promoting a culture of sustainability within the school and community.
ICT Holiday Bootcamps for Girls
ICT Holiday Bootcamps for Girls equip students with practical digital skills through hands-on training in computer applications, programming, graphics design, robotics, and emerging technologies. The bootcamps inspire innovation, creativity, and confidence while preparing girls to pursue STEM careers and become future technology leaders.

• Enhance STEM Learning: Strengthen teacher training, mentorship, and infrastructure for science and technology education.
• Promote Digital and Environmental Literacy: Build capacity in coding, animation, climate-smart practices, and sustainability.
• Develop Entrepreneurial & Leadership Skills: Support girl-led innovation labs, startups, and income-generating projects.
• Build Partnerships and Linkages: Collaborate with schools, NGOs, government bodies, and private sector actors to scale impact.
• Foster Research and Advocacy: Conduct studies and influence policies to strengthen girls’ education in STEM.
• Ensure Organizational Sustainability: Strengthen governance, diversify funding, and expand community support networks.

Robotics & STEM Engineering
Students build and program robots, learning electronics, sensors, automation, and problem-solving.
Impact: Our robotics program nurtures engineering confidence and inspires girls to pursue STEM careers.
Urban Farming & Smart Agriculture
Using repurposed materials such as old tyres, plastic bottles, and jerrycans, students create innovative farming systems to grow vegetables for the school.
Impact: This project addresses food security and teaches sustainable agriculture, irrigation, and eco-engineering, and environmental conservation
Waste Segregation & Recycling Initiative
We educate students on waste management and environmental sustainability through hands-on activities. Our girls sort waste at source, recycle plastics, and convert organic waste into manure.
Impact: This project builds environmental awareness, entrepreneurship, and green technology skills.
